Study Permit Authorization

Must have had authorization to study in Canada within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of program completion

Eligible Institution & Program

Graduated from a PGWP-eligible designated learning institution (DLI) with a minimum 8-month program

Full-Time Status

Maintained full-time student status during each academic session (exceptions for final session, authorized leave, and special measures)

No Previous PGWP

Must not have previously held a PGWP under administrative code C43

Language Requirements

  • โ€ข University graduates: CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French
  • โ€ข College graduates: CLB 5 in English or NCLC 5 in French
  • โ€ข All 4 language skills required (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Field of Study Requirements

  • โ€ข University: Bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree (any field)
  • โ€ข College: Programs in eligible fields of study only
  • โ€ข Must consult IRCC's eligible field-of-study list

Exemptions

  • โ€ข Applications submitted before November 1, 2024
  • โ€ข Flight school graduates
  • โ€ข Study permit extensions for same program

Must apply within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of program completion from your DLI

Special measures for distance learning were in place from March 1, 2020, to August 31, 2024

  • โ€ข Can work without permit pending decision (R186(w))
  • โ€ข Must maintain temporary resident status

Outside Canada (Section R197)

  • โ€ข Electronic submission for processing outside Canada
  • โ€ข Can remain in Canada as visitor while waiting
  • โ€ข Cannot work while waiting for decision
  • โ€ข Must leave and re-enter for final approval
